11 Cozy Fall Books to Read This Year

At the time of the writing of this blog post, it’s still really warm during the day here in New Jersey. It’s fluctuating between the mid-70s to 80s. But it has been regularly much cooler at night (with the exception of this week). The leaves are also starting to change color here and falling. And with everything happening in the world, I’ve committed to spending less time on social media, embracing more time spent with my daughter, and reverting back to much more simple and enjoyable activities to do throughout the day.

Fall is the season when cozy reads feel most at home — stories that draw you in, wrap you in comfort, and make you want to sip tea while turning the pages. If you’re looking to add to your fall reading list or start one like I am, I’ve gathered 10 cozy fall books that are perfect companions for your September, October, and November evenings.

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

cozy autumn books

This classic is the ultimate cozy autumn book. With vivid descriptions of seasons changing on Prince Edward Island and Anne’s boundless imagination, it’s a nostalgic read perfect for fall afternoons. If you’re not familiar with this story, it was written in 1908, and the story is set in the late 19th century.

Anne of Green Gables follows the adventures of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and spirited orphan mistakenly sent to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. Marilla and Matthew are siblings who had intended to adopt a boy to help with farm work on their property, Green Gables, in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island.

At first Marilla considers sending Anne back, but decides not to because of Anne’s charm, wit, and lively imagination that quickly wins over the Cuthberts and the community. The story captures Anne’s mishaps and triumphs — from accidentally dyeing her hair green to forming deep friendships (most notably with Diana Barry) and rivalries (especially with Gilbert Blythe, who teases her about her red hair).

At its heart, the novel is about belonging, family, and personal growth. Anne grows from a spirited, impulsive child into a thoughtful, determined young woman who deeply loves her home at Green Gables and the people around her.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

cozy books to read

Ok, if you haven’t watch the Secret Garden (90s version), you need to also add this to your fall movie list. A story about hidden beauty and the healing power of nature. It’s atmospheric and inspiring — ideal for those crisp mornings when you’re dreaming of your own cozy retreat.

The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox, a spoiled and lonely young girl who is sent to live with her reclusive uncle, Archibald Craven, in a gloomy Yorkshire manor after the death of her parents. At first withdrawn and bitter, Mary begins to change when she discovers an overgrown, locked garden hidden on the estate. With the help of Dickon, a kind boy who understands nature, and her sickly cousin Colin, Mary brings the garden back to life.

As the garden flourishes, so do the children. Colin, once convinced he would never walk, finds strength and health, while Mary blossoms into a kind, caring girl. The novel highlights themes of healing, friendship, and the restorative power of nature, showing how tending to the earth can also mend hearts.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

best cozy fall books

The Night Circus is a lush, magical tale centered on a mysterious circus that appears without warning and only opens at night. Within its black-and-white striped tents, visitors discover breathtaking illusions, enchanting performances, and dreamlike wonders.

But behind the scenes, the circus is the stage for a fierce competition between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been bound since childhood to a magical contest they don’t fully understand. As the circus grows, so does the bond between them—turning a battle of skill into a deep, forbidden love.

Surrounded by devoted performers and dreamers, the pair must confront the truth of their destiny and the cost of their magic. At its heart, The Night Circus is a story about imagination, love, and the way art can transform both its creators and those who experience it.

The Simplicity of Cider by Amy E. Reichert

cozy autumn books for adults

Set in an apple orchard, this contemporary romance feels like a mug of hot cider in book form. Sweet, comforting, and rooted in family and tradition.

The Simplicity of Cider is a heartwarming contemporary novel set in Door County, Wisconsin, on a family-run apple orchard. At the center of the story is Sanna Lund, a talented but introverted cider maker who prefers the quiet rhythm of the orchard to the chaos of the outside world. She’s focused on carrying on her family’s cider tradition, even as the business faces struggles and her father worries about the future.

Life shifts when Isaac Banks, a kind and selfless single father, arrives with his young son to work on the orchard for the summer. While Sanna guards her solitude fiercely, she’s gradually drawn to Isaac’s warmth and his son’s innocent curiosity. As summer unfolds, the three find themselves forming an unexpected bond, one that promises healing, second chances, and the reminder that love can be found in the simplest moments.

This is a tender story about family, resilience, and discovering joy in life’s small but meaningful pleasures—much like the craft of making cider itself.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

cozy fall novels

A timeless story of sisterhood and resilience. Though it spans the seasons, the autumn and winter chapters feel particularly cozy. And just my two cents, the movie from the 90s with Winona Ryder is the best. Add it to your fall movie list too!

Little Women follows the lives of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—growing up in Massachusetts during the Civil War. Raised by their loving but financially struggling mother, Marmee, while their father is away serving as a chaplain, the girls each navigate the joys and challenges of adolescence.

Meg, the eldest, dreams of stability and a family of her own. Jo, fiery and independent, longs to be a writer and resists the expectations placed on women. Gentle Beth is content with a quiet, selfless life, while spirited Amy aspires to artistic success and refinement. Together, they face hardships, celebrate triumphs, and lean on one another through illness, love, and loss.

At its heart, the novel is about sisterhood, resilience, and the passage from girlhood to womanhood. It shows that while each sister follows a different path, their bond—and the values instilled in them—remains unshakable.

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

cozy fall books to read

Witches, small-town charm, and a touch of magic make this a wonderful choice for October. It’s a cozy autumn book with just enough mystery.

***This book is part of a series of four books.

Practical Magic tells the story of the Owens sisters, Gillian and Sally, who grow up under the care of their eccentric aunts in a Massachusetts home where magic and superstition are part of daily life. The family is burdened by a centuries-old curse: any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is doomed.

As children, Gillian and Sally long to escape the whispers of their neighbors and the shadow of their family’s reputation. Gillian becomes restless and wild, running away in search of adventure, while Sally craves a normal life and stability. Yet fate pulls them back together when Gillian’s troubled choices collide with Sally’s carefully built world.

Blending romance, loss, and sisterhood, the novel weaves a story where love and magic intertwine, showing that even curses can’t extinguish the resilience of family and the power of hope.

The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan

Fall Reading List

A charming story of second chances, bookish love, and cozy villages. Perfect for curling up on a rainy fall day.

This charming novel follows Nina, a shy librarian whose world is turned upside down when her beloved library closes. Suddenly out of work and unsure of what comes next, she takes a leap of faith by transforming a beat-up old van into a traveling bookshop. As she drives through the Scottish Highlands, Nina discovers new friends, a slower pace of life, and the possibility of love along the way.

It’s a heartwarming story about finding courage, building a new life from scratch, and the healing power of books.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

September Reads

Back-to-school vibes, magical feasts, and autumn adventures at Hogwarts make this a classic fall reread. This book series in one of my all time favorites. I love these books so much and the movies as well. Add these to the movie list too! You won’t be disappointed, plus they’re kid friendly.

The first book in the world-famous series introduces readers to Harry, an orphan who discovers on his 11th birthday that he is a wizard. Swept away to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry finds friendship, magical adventures, and the truth about his mysterious past. Alongside Hermione and Ron, he faces challenges that test his bravery and loyalty, including a hidden stone that holds unimaginable power.

More than a fantasy story, this novel is about friendship, courage, and the magic of belonging — perfect for cozy fall reading.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows

cozy fall books

This is also a movie and I honestly loved this movie. I don’t know what it is but for some reason I’m drawn to the time periods that include Henry VIII and WWII.

Set just after World War II, this novel unfolds through a series of letters exchanged between Juliet Ashton, a London writer searching for her next book idea, and a group of residents on the island of Guernsey. Intrigued by their unusual book club—the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—Juliet begins corresponding with its members, each of whom shares personal stories about surviving the German occupation of the island.

As Juliet learns about the hardships, resilience, and quiet acts of bravery that sustained the community, she becomes deeply connected to the islanders and their lives. Eventually, she travels to Guernsey herself, where she discovers love, friendship, and a new sense of belonging.

At its heart, this is a warm and hopeful story about the healing power of books, the strength of human connection, and the courage it takes to rebuild after dark times.

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

October Reads

Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey follows Catherine Morland, a young woman with an active imagination shaped by her love of Gothic novels. Invited by family friends to stay in the fashionable city of Bath, Catherine experiences the excitement of social gatherings for the first time. There, she befriends the vivacious Isabella Thorpe and meets the charming Henry Tilney, who soon becomes her romantic interest.

When Catherine is invited to visit Henry’s family estate, Northanger Abbey, her imagination runs wild. Influenced by the Gothic tales she adores, she suspects hidden mysteries and dark family secrets within the abbey’s ancient walls. Instead, she discovers that real life is far more ordinary — and at times, more disappointing — than her novels suggest.

Ultimately, Catherine learns to balance her lively imagination with reason and maturity. Through her journey, Austen playfully critiques Gothic fiction while also satirizing society’s expectations for women, love, and marriage. In the end, Catherine grows into her own sense of judgment and finds happiness with Henry Tilney, highlighting Austen’s blend of wit, irony, and romantic charm.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

November Reads

Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is a haunting tale of passion, revenge, and the destructive power of obsession. The story is framed through the perspective of Mr. Lockwood, a tenant at Thrushcross Grange, who becomes intrigued by his landlord Heathcliff and the dark history surrounding the nearby estate, Wuthering Heights.

At its heart is the turbulent relationship between Heathcliff, an orphan taken in by the Earnshaw family, and Catherine Earnshaw. Their bond is intense and all-consuming, but also deeply destructive. When Catherine chooses to marry the refined Edgar Linton for social status rather than follow her love for Heathcliff, it sets off a cycle of bitterness and vengeance.

Heathcliff’s obsession with Catherine endures even after her death, driving him to manipulate the next generation of Earnshaws and Lintons in a relentless quest for control and retribution. The novel explores themes of love twisted by pride, social class, and cruelty, set against the wild and unforgiving Yorkshire moors.

Though tragic and often unsettling, Wuthering Heights remains a classic for its raw emotional intensity and its exploration of love’s power to both elevate and destroy.
