In today’s hyperconnected world, we’re constantly surrounded by technology—whether it’s our smartphones, computers, or even smart home devices. While these advancements make life more convenient and simpler, they can also contribute to stress, burnout, and a sense of disconnection from the real world. A digital detox—taking intentional breaks from technology—combined with mindful technology use can significantly improve your mental and physical well-being.

There are lots of benefits to doing a digital detox. Being connected to the world via tech can be overwhelming and so stressful, especially if you’re constantly scrolling on social media. Things like social media can lead to all sorts of issues arising. Social media for instance can have a lot of positives – staying connected with family and being able to share special moments and photos, reconnecting with old friends or connecting with new friends and classmates, and it can even be a great marketing tool for businesses big and small. In spite of the benefits of social media, there’s a very ugly side to it. 

The Ugly Side of Tech

In an article posted by the website Lifespan, they noted a range of issues that arise from social media like online bullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), body image issues, increased usage of social media instead of real life interactions and more. Lifespan noted that “as many as 43% of teens are bullied online,” (Dalomba).

Suicide is actually one of the leading causes of death of children under the age of 14 years old.

I digress from this subject since it’s a whole other subject and you get the point.

Physical Negative Impacts of Technology

We’ve already talked about the mental health impacts that technology can have. But what physical impacts does it cause?

Using technology can lead to issues such as eye strain and headaches. Staring at screens for prolonged periods can lead to digital eye strain or “computer vision syndrome.” Symptoms include dry eyes, headaches, and difficulty focusing. It can also lead to poor posture. Hunching over a laptop or phone for hours leads to back, neck, and shoulder pain. One of the last physical impacts to touch upon is interrupting sleep. The blue light emitted from screens interferes with our body’s natural sleep rhythm by suppressing melatonin production. This can lead to poor sleep quality or insomnia.

Why is a digital detox important?

There are so many benefits to a digital detox. Let’s take a look at why doing one is important.

A digital detox can:

  • Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Constant connectivity can contribute to stress, especially through social media comparison, work emails, and information overload. With all of the information we have available at our fingertips, it can be extremely overwhelming.

By stepping away from screens, we give our minds a break, allowing for clearer thinking and better focus.

  • Enhances Sleep Quality

Excessive screen time, particularly before bed, disrupts our natural sleep cycles, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. When screen time is used before bedtime it interrupts melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that is responsible for helping you fall asleep. The blue light from the screen also tricks the brain into thinking it’s daytime. There is a lot of controversy over the radiation that’s emitted by things like cell phones. Many believe that the radiation from phones is harmful to your health. Regardless of what you believe, phones do interrupt your sleep which can cause delays in falling asleep and even headaches.

  • Boosts Overall Well-Being

A digital detox encourages face-to-face interactions, physical activity, and relaxation—things that nurture the body and soul.

Now that we’ve thoroughly discussed the impacts on our health that technology has, below are tips on how to actually do digital detox. None of the below involves spending money and it’s free to do!

Disconnecting from the online world may seem pretty difficult. Many of us are attached to their phones (myself included in all honesty) and I’ve been looking at ways to become less so. This can be quite challenging since I’m in the process of launching a business and writing this blog.

How to Reduce Screen Time and Introduce Screen Time Limits

Most smartphones have built-in tools to monitor and limit screen time. Set daily or weekly limits for specific apps, especially social media, to cut back on unnecessary screen use. Consider creating “no-tech” zones or times, such as during meals, workouts, or when spending time with loved ones.

Establish Tech-Free Hours

This is kind of similar to the above. Designate specific times of the day when you avoid all devices, such as the first hour after waking up or the hour before bedtime. This helps establish a mindful routine and reduces dependence on devices. You can also try implementing a morning mindfulness routine without screens to start your day grounded and focused.

Practice the 20-20-20 Rule: Screen Time Tips for Eye Health

To combat eye strain, follow the 20-20-20 rule – for every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This simple practice relaxes your eyes and reduces fatigue. This one may be easier said than done, depending on your line of work.

How to Reduce Distractions

Turn off non-essential notifications to reduce the temptation of checking your phone constantly. This is a great tip to implement. We receive so many notifications on our phones without even realizing. Move distracting apps like social media or games from your home screen to make them less accessible. You can even try deleting the most time-consuming apps temporarily to break the habit of checking them.

Use technology with a clear purpose, whether it’s for work, learning, or staying connected. Avoid mindless scrolling by asking yourself: “Does this align with my goals?”

 Non-Tech Hobbies: Schedule Downtime for Creative or Relaxing Activities

Many of us use our phones and TV as a way to wind down. As we’ve seen throughout this post though, it’s contradictory to our goals of trying to relax. Instead of defaulting to your phone during downtime, replace that screen time with non-digital activities. Consider reading a book, journaling, walking, or engaging in a creative hobby like drawing or cooking.

 Mindful Use of Social Media

Set limits on how often you check social media. For instance, restrict social media usage to specific times of day, like during lunch or after work, rather than constantly checking notifications. Clean up your social media feeds by unfollowing accounts that make you feel stressed, anxious, or inadequate. Only follow accounts that truly resonate with you and add value.

Health Tech Habits: Create a Balanced Tech-Life Relationship

Balance technology use with time spent offline. A tech-life balance ensures that you’re using devices in a healthy and productive way without letting them dominate your time. Think about how much free time you’ll have by just putting down your phone or turning off the tv. What once felt like you were short on time will now feel like you’ve gained SO much time! Track your screen time regularly to monitor your progress and adjust your habits accordingly.

 How to Stay Consistent with Your Digital Detox

Starting a digital detox is one thing, but maintaining it requires consistency and commitment. Here’s how to stay on track:

 1. Start Small and Build Up

Begin by taking short breaks from screens, such as a 30-minute phone-free period, and gradually extend these periods as you become more comfortable. Small, consistent changes lead to long-term success.

 2. Involve Family and Friends

Encourage your family or friends to join you in your digital detox journey. You could even create tech-free zones at home or plan tech-free group activities like board games or outdoor adventures.

 3. Reflect on the Benefits

Keep a journal or track how reducing screen time impacts your well-being, mood, and productivity. Noticing these positive changes will motivate you to continue your digital detox practice.
